The continuous aspect
Hello. In this lesson we’re going to explore the continuous aspect in English — an important concept for expressing actions in progress and temporary situations.
First, what do we mean by aspect?
An aspect is simply a way of looking at an action. In English, we have three main aspects: simple, continuous, and perfect.
The simple aspect focuses on completed actions or general facts.
The perfect aspect connects one time to another — showing that something happened before a certain point.
But the continuous aspect is different. It focuses on the action itself and its duration, rather than the result.
We use the continuous aspect to show that an action is temporary or happening over a period of time.
For example:
“They’ve been waiting here for an hour.”
Here, the emphasis is on the duration — how long the action has been happening.
We also use it for actions in progress when something else happens:
“John was crying when I arrived.”
Another key use is for temporary or incomplete situations:
“He’s living with his parents until he finds a house.”
This is not permanent — it’s only for now.
The continuous can also describe repeated actions, especially when they are annoying:
“She’s always playing her music loudly.”
Notice the feeling of irritation here.
We use it for situations that are changing:
“The economy is getting worse.”
This shows a process, not a fixed state.
Interestingly, the continuous can also be used for plans or intentions, often in the past:
“I was thinking of going home this weekend.”
And for polite or less direct requests:
“I was wondering if I could borrow some money.”
This sounds softer and more tentative than a direct question.
Finally, we use the continuous to describe actions happening at a specific moment:
“Everyone seems to be working at the moment.”
Now, a very important point: not all verbs are used in the continuous.
So-called state verbs — such as love, believe, understand, or hear — usually describe feelings, thoughts, or senses. These are not normally used in continuous forms.
For example, we say: “I understand,” not “I am understanding.”
To sum up, the continuous aspect helps us focus on activity, duration, and change, rather than completed results.
