Comparatives and Superlatives for Financial Analysis

Hello again! Today we’re diving into one of the most useful skills for accountants: comparing results in English. You’ll learn to describe trends, highlight differences, and talk about which figures are higher, lower, better, or worse — all in a professional, natural way.

We’re not going to memorize grammar rules. Instead, we’ll see how English is actually used in reports, emails, and meetings

Let’s step into a small scenario: the finance team is reviewing last month’s numbers. Ana, the accountant, is summarizing what happened. She explains that revenue increased compared to June because of stronger online sales, while operating costs were slightly lower thanks to improved supplier contracts. She notes that among all the product lines, electronics performed the best, showing the highest growth in both volume and profit. Meanwhile, the least profitable product was home appliances, which saw lower sales than expected.

Notice how Ana frames comparisons clearly and professionally. She focuses on describing trends and differences in a way that makes sense for her audience, using simple comparative and superlative phrases. Even as a learner, you can follow the same approach: pick the key point, then choose the appropriate words to compare or highlight extremes.

A quick reminder of how comparatives and superlatives work: we use the suffixes -er or -est for shorter words (ones which are constructed of no more than 1 syllable). We use more and the most for longer words (or ones which have more than 1 syllable). The words which end in -y always use -er or -est for comparative and superlative forms. And of course there are exceptions for example with the word good which becomes a completely different word in the comparative form (better) and another one in the superlative (the best). If there is still confusion or you want a more detailed explanation of this grammar, you can visit our General English courses for the Intermediate B1 level on our website or enroll for an online or in-person course with a tutor.

Comparisons often involve more than just numbers; they describe change, trend, and performance. For example, instead of saying “the number is bigger”, Ana says:

  • Revenue is higher than last month.
  • Costs are lower than forecasted.
  • Profit margins are better than expected.

Even small words like than, as, or more/less make the comparison precise. In English, we always signal what is being compared.

Sometimes accountants need to show which figures are the strongest or weakest. Ana mentions that electronics had the highest growth, and home appliances the lowest. In these situations, she uses superlatives naturally:

  • “Q2 was the most profitable quarter this year.”
  • “Among our departments, Marketing achieved the best results in Q3.”
  • “The least performing department was Customer Support due to high overtime costs.”

This helps listeners immediately identify top and bottom performers without needing long explanations.

Notice how Ana never says “comparative adjective + than” mechanically. Instead, she phrases it around what’s meaningful in finance: trends, changes, and results.

For instance:

  • Instead of “Sales were greater than last month,” she says: “Revenue is higher this month because of new client contracts.”
  • Instead of “This was the most successful project,” she says: “Our electronics campaign had the best results in terms of sales and margin.”

The difference is subtle but makes the English sound natural and professional.

The same style works in writing. Ana’s monthly report to her manager reads:

“Revenue in July increased by 12% compared to June, while operating costs were 5% lower than budgeted. Electronics showed the highest growth, increasing 20% in both volume and profit. Home appliances were the least profitable category this month.”

No bullets, just smooth, professional sentences. Some additional points which would be helpful are:

Lead with the main metric or trend – put the key number first, then add context.

Use clear linking and comparison phrases – “compared to…”, “month-on-month”, “year-on-year” help your reader follow trends easily.

Keep sentences concise and structured – short, clear sentences with repeated units and optional context make emails and reports professional and easy to read.

Even experienced accountants make small mistakes in English. The most common ones include:

  • Forgetting than in comparisons. Say “higher than last month”, not “higher last month.”
  • Dropping the before superlatives. Always say “the best result”, “the highest revenue.”
  • Overcomplicating sentences. Keep it clear: state the number, the trend, and the result.

Today, you learned how to describe changes, trends, and extremes in English for financial reports, emails, and meetings. We didn’t focus on grammar rules — instead, we focused on English in use, the way accountants really speak.

Your challenge: next time you summarize results for your team, try using comparatives and superlatives naturally, just like Ana did. Describe what’s higher, lower, better, worse, the most, and the least — in fluent, professional English.

Until next time!
