Reaching Agreement

Hello. In this lesson, we’re going to learn useful phrases for reaching agreement. We use these phrases when we discuss ideas, make decisions, work in a team, or plan something together. The goal is not only to speak English correctly, but also to sound polite, clear and cooperative.

Let’s start with phrases for giving opinions. Instead of always saying I think, we can use more natural phrases like The way I see things, ... or The way I see it, ... For example: The way I see it, the company needs a simple name that people can remember. This phrase means: this is my opinion or my point of view. In Bulgarian, we can say: Според мен / Аз го виждам така...

Another useful phrase is I really feel that... This is a good way to give a stronger personal opinion. For example: I really feel that we need to specialise, because customers like companies with a clear idea. This sounds clear, but still polite. It is useful in meetings because it shows what you believe without sounding aggressive.

Now let’s look at phrases for making suggestions. A simple phrase is What about...? For example: What about Mediterranean food? This means: maybe this is a good idea. Another common phrase is Why don’t we...? For example: Why don’t we call the company Food4events? We use it when we want to suggest an action to the group.

We can also say How about if we...? For example: How about if we call it Italy On The Move? This is useful when we suggest a possible plan and want to hear what other people think. In Bulgarian, these phrases are similar to: Ами ако...? / Защо не...? / Какво ще кажете за...?

Some suggestions sound a little more organised and formal. For example: I suggest we focus on... means: let’s give attention to this point. We can say: I suggest we focus on the type of food first. Another useful phrase is I suggest we think about... For example: I suggest we think about how we’re going to sell the product.

We can also say: I think we should think about the name later.

Now let’s learn phrases for commenting on other opinions. When we agree, we can say That’s a good idea or That’s a good point. A good idea is a useful suggestion. A good point is a useful argument or detail in the discussion. For example: That’s a good point. We should choose a name that sounds professional.

If we agree completely, we can say Exactly! For example: Exactly! We need something short and easy to remember. If we accept another person’s suggestion, we can say That’s fine by me or That’s OK by me. These phrases mean: I agree, or I have no problem with that. For example: Let’s meet at ten tomorrow. — That’s fine by me.

Sometimes we do not agree, but we need to be polite. We can say I don’t see what you mean when we do not understand someone’s point. For example: I don’t see what you mean. Why would that name be confusing?

We can also say I’m not sure that I agree, actually. This is softer than saying You’re wrong.

Another useful phrase is I’m not sure that ... is a good idea. For example: I’m not sure that central London is a good idea because it’s expensive to rent office space there. This phrase is useful because it disagrees politely and gives a reason.

Let’s imagine a short meeting. One person says: The way I see it, we need a name first. Another says: That’s a good point, but I suggest we focus on the food first. A third person says: What about Mediterranean food? Someone answers: Exactly! That’s popular and easy to sell. Then another person says: Why don’t we call it Buon Appetito? Finally, the group says: That’s fine by me. Now they have reached agreement.

So, remember: use The way I see it and I really feel that to give opinions. Use What about...?, Why don’t we...?, How about if we...? and I suggest we... to make suggestions. Use That’s a good point, Exactly, and That’s fine by me to agree. Use I’m not sure that I agree to disagree politely.

When people reach agreement, they listen, explain and respect each other’s ideas. I hope this lesson helps you speak more confidently in group discussions, share your opinion clearly, and find good decisions together.
