Hello. In this lesson, we’re going to learn useful vocabulary about technology. Technology is all around us. It gives us energy, helps us travel, cleans our homes, connects people, and changes medicine and science. Some technology makes life easier, but it can also create problems, so it is useful to talk about it clearly in English.
Let’s start with the first group: energy. Electricity is the power we use for lights, computers, phones and many machines at home. For example: When there is no electricity, we can’t use the lights, the internet router or the washing machine. In Bulgarian, electricity means електричество.
Another energy phrase is nuclear power. This is energy produced from nuclear reactions. It can produce a lot of electricity, but some people worry about safety and nuclear waste. For example: Some countries use nuclear power because it can produce large amounts of electricity. A cleaner type of energy is solar power. Solar power comes from the sun. For example: Many houses now use solar power to heat water or produce electricity.
Now let’s move to machines. A washing machine is a machine that washes clothes. For example: The washing machine saves time because people don’t have to wash all their clothes by hand. A vacuum cleaner is a machine that cleans floors by sucking up dust. For example: After the children played in the living room, we used the vacuum cleaner to clean the carpet.
Some machines help us travel. Motorbikes are small two-wheeled vehicles with engines. For example: In busy cities, some people use motorbikes because they are easier to park than cars. Commercial aeroplanes are planes used for carrying passengers or goods, not private planes. For example: Commercial aeroplanes allow people to travel from Sofia to London in only a few hours.
The next group is medicine and science. Antibiotics are medicines that fight infections caused by bacteria. For example: The doctor gave him antibiotics because he had a serious chest infection. Vaccinations protect people from some diseases. For example: Vaccinations help stop dangerous illnesses from spreading through schools and communities.
Another important phrase is genetic engineering. This means changing the genes of plants, animals or other living things. In Bulgarian: генетично инженерство. For example: Scientists use genetic engineering to create crops that can survive in difficult weather.
Space travel is also part of science and technology. For example: Space travel helps scientists learn more about planets, satellites and life beyond Earth.
Finally, let’s look at IT, or information technology. Computer networks are systems that connect computers so they can share information. For example: Schools and offices use computer networks so people can share files and use the same printer.
Communications satellites are machines in space that help send TV, phone and internet signals around the world. For example: Communications satellites make it possible to watch live news from another continent.
So, remember the four groups. For energy, we have electricity, nuclear power and solar power. For machines, we have washing machines, vacuum cleaners, motorbikes and commercial aeroplanes. For medicine and science, we have antibiotics, vaccinations, genetic engineering and space travel. And for IT, we have computer networks and communications satellites.
Technology can make the world faster, cleaner, healthier and more connected. But we also need to use it carefully and responsibly. I hope this lesson helps you describe technology more clearly, understand modern inventions better, and speak about the world around you with more confidence.
