Technology Problems and Solutions

Hello. In this lesson, we’re going to learn useful vocabulary for technology problems and solutions. These phrases are very helpful in everyday life because phones, computers, printers, cash machines and household machines sometimes stop working. The important thing is to explain the problem clearly and suggest a simple solution.

Let’s start with a common problem: It’s broken down. We use this phrase when a machine stops working. For example: The vacuum cleaner has broken down, so I can’t clean the carpet. In Bulgarian, we can say: повредило се е / развалило се е. We often use break down for machines, cars, buses and equipment.

Another useful phrase is It doesn’t work any more. This is very simple and very clear. For example: My old laptop doesn’t work any more, so I need to buy a new one. We can also say It doesn’t work if the problem is happening now: The printer doesn’t work. Can you help me?

Sometimes the problem is not permanent. For phones, tablets and laptops, we can say It needs recharging. This means the battery is low or empty. For example: My phone needs recharging because the battery is only at two percent. In Bulgarian: трябва да се зареди.

When a machine is not working in a public place, we often say It’s out of order. For example: The ATM is out of order, so we can’t take out any money. We can also see signs that say Out of order on toilets, lifts, ticket machines or coffee machines. This phrase means the machine cannot be used at the moment.

Another problem phrase is It’s crashed or It’s frozen. We usually use these for computers, phones or apps. If a computer has crashed, it has stopped working suddenly. If it is frozen, nothing moves on the screen. For example: My computer has frozen, and I can’t move the mouse or close the programme.

Some problems are strange but not clear. We can say It keeps making this strange noise. This means the machine makes the noise again and again. For example: The washing machine keeps making this strange noise, so maybe something is wrong inside it. In Bulgarian, keeps making means продължава да издава / постоянно издава.

Now let’s move to solutions. A very common solution is Try switching it off and on again. This means: turn the machine off, wait a moment, and turn it on again. For example: If the computer is frozen, try switching it off and on again. This often helps with phones, computers, routers and smart TVs.

Another useful phrase is It needs fixing. This means someone needs to repair it. For example: The printer needs fixing because the paper is stuck and nothing comes out. We can also say: We need to get it fixed, which means we need someone to repair it.

If there is a problem and we need to solve it, we can say We have to sort it out. This means we have to find a solution. For example: The internet is not working, and we have an online lesson in ten minutes. We have to sort it out quickly. In Bulgarian: трябва да го оправим / да намерим решение.

Sometimes the problem is connected with a phone signal. We can say There is no reception for my phone. This means the phone cannot connect to the mobile network. For example: There is no reception in this room, so I can’t make a call. This is different from Wi-Fi; reception is connected with the phone signal.

Finally, let’s look at two useful offers of help. Save it onto a memory stick means put the file onto a USB memory stick. For example: The computer is old, so save the document onto a memory stick before it crashes. And Shall I print it for you? is a polite offer. For example: The teacher needs the document on paper, so shall I print it for you?

So, remember: for problems, use phrases like It’s broken down, It needs recharging, It’s out of order, It’s crashed, It’s frozen, and It keeps making this strange noise. For solutions, use phrases like Try switching it off and on again, It needs fixing, We have to sort it out, Save it onto a memory stick, and Shall I print it for you?

Technology problems can be annoying, but clear English makes them easier to explain and solve. I hope this lesson helps you talk about everyday problems with phones, computers and machines more confidently.
