Hello again, and welcome to Lesson 1.2 – Describing Your Role and Department in English.

In today’s lesson, we will practise introducing ourselves professionally in English, explaining what we do, and describing the department we work in. This is very important for accountants, because you often need to speak with international colleagues, auditors, or clients.

Imagine you’re at a meeting with auditors from abroad. They ask: “What’s your role?” or “Which department are you from?”
If you can answer clearly in English, you build trust and avoid misunderstandings.

Instead of just memorising titles, let’s imagine a short networking event.

 Imagine you are at a conference coffee break. Someone new comes up and asks:
“What’s your role in your company?”

Here are some possible answers:

• “I am a chief accountant. I manage the accounting team and prepare the company’s financial statements.”
• “I am a financial controller. I check that the reports are accurate and follow regulations.”
• “I am a payroll specialist. I calculate and process monthly salaries.”
• “I am a tax consultant. I advise clients on taxes and prepare tax reports.”

Tip: Always use “a” or “an” before a job title when introducing yourself.
Example: “I am a payroll specialist.”

Now let’s connect responsibilities to real situations.

In a meeting, you might say:

• “I prepare monthly reports for management.”
• “I process invoices from suppliers.”
• “I monitor expenses to make sure the budget is correct.”
• “I manage client accounts, especially international ones.”

Notice: we use the present simple tense for regular duties.

Departments also have names you will often use. Let’s practise them in sentences:

• “I work in the accounts payable team. We are responsible for paying suppliers.”
• “I’m part of the accounts receivable team. We make sure clients pay us on time.”
• “I work in the audit department. We review the company’s processes.”
• “Our finance department prepares the company’s financial statements.”

Tip: Always explain what your department does. This makes your answer clearer.

Here’s an example of a real conversation:

A: “What do you do at your company?”
B: “I am a payroll specialist. I work in the finance department, and I am responsible for preparing monthly salary payments.”
A: “Oh, so you manage all employee salaries?”
B: “Yes, exactly. I also prepare payroll reports for HR.”

А: „С какво се занимавате във вашата фирма?“
Б: „Аз съм специалист по заплати. Работя във финансовия отдел и отговарям за подготовката на месечните плащания.“

Now it’s your turn. Think about your real job and practise answering these questions in English:

1. What is your job title?
2. Which department do you work in?
3. What are your main responsibilities?

Try to give complete answers, not just one word. For example:
“I am accountant.”
“I am an accountant. I work in the finance department, and I prepare reports.”

Today we learned how to describe our role and department in English. We practised job titles, responsibilities, and department names in real contexts.
